The PS Portal, Sony's innovative handheld gaming accessory for the PS5, resembles an extended split-pad DualSense controller with an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen nestled in the center. It transforms your PS5 into a portable gaming device, allowing you to stream games from your console at up to 60fps. The controller retains all the beloved features of the DualSense, such as haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a touchscreen interface that substitutes for the traditional touchpad. The Portal can stream your games even when you're away from home, provided you have access to a stable and fast internet connection. It's important to note that the PS Portal is not a standalone device; it strictly serves as a remote player for the PlayStation 5, requiring a PS5 to function.
Exciting news for PS Portal owners: you no longer need a PS5 to enjoy gaming on the go. Sony has rolled out a feature enabling direct streaming from its PlayStation Now cloud service. This means Portal owners can connect either to their PS5 or directly to Sony’s cloud servers, thanks to recent quality-of-life beta updates launched in April. Opting for the latter gives you instant access to a vast library of over 120 games, including hits like Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part 1 Remastered, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Keep in mind that you'll need to subscribe to the highest tier of PlayStation Plus, but at $18 a month, it's a more affordable alternative to buying a $500 console and additional games.
While the PlayStation Portal is a prime choice for streaming PS5 games over Wi-Fi within your home, it's not the only option. You can achieve similar functionality by downloading the PS Remote Play app on a mobile device or other gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck. However, setting this up is more complex, and you'll miss out on some of the DualSense's unique features.
PlayStation Portal Review by Seth Macy
"The PlayStation Portal has exceeded my expectations in the most surprising way. It's a far superior experience compared to using your phone with an attached controller, and it performs much better than I anticipated. I appreciate the freedom it offers to play my PS5 from anywhere with decent WiFi coverage, especially when the rest of my family is using the TV to play the Switch. It's worth noting that the Portal is not a standalone device; it requires a PlayStation 5 to function. The only drawbacks preventing it from being a truly exceptional device are the lack of support for WiFi networks that require a web browser to log in and the absence of Bluetooth audio support. Despite these limitations, the Portal is currently the best solution for PlayStation Remote Play. If not for these two issues, I'd recommend it as a must-have for every PS5 owner who enjoys handheld gaming or competes for the household TV."
