Pocketpair, known for Palworld, is expanding into publishing to launch the next project from Surgent Studios, creators of Tales of Kenzera: Zau.
Pocketpair Publishing announced on X/Twitter its collaboration on a new horror game by Surgent Studios, which debuted with Tales of Kenzera: Zau last April. This upcoming title will not tie into that universe.
“We’ve identified a trend in the entertainment world, and Pocketpair has given us the chance to craft a horror game exploring it,” said Abubakar Salim, CEO of Surgent Studios. “Both our teams thrive on bold moves. This game will be concise, unconventional, and we believe it will captivate players with its unique perspective.”
“We’re actively discussing future projects in the Tales of Kenzera universe, but this horror game stands alone, marking a bridge between our past and future work.”
No release date or title has been shared, suggesting the project is still in early stages. It is distinct from Surgent Studios’ previously teased Project Uso concept.
Pocketpair Publishing is now open to pitches from other developers. “We’re not here to dictate your vision, seize control, or steer your game in a specific direction,” the company stated on its website.
John Buckley, head of Pocketpair Publishing, said: “At Pocketpair, our passion is games, and Pocketpair Publishing is our way to amplify that love globally. Game development is tough, but we aim to simplify the journey, fostering an environment where creators can chase their dreams.”
“Supporting Surgent Studios’ new title is our first step. We resonate with their originality and passion and are privileged to help bring their vision to life. We’ll honor developers’ independence and collaborate to create exceptional games for players worldwide.”
Salim, also known for acting roles as Bayek in Assassin’s Creed Origins, Alyn of Hull in House of the Dragon, and the lead in Tales of Kenzera: Zau, expressed pride in being Pocketpair Publishing’s inaugural partner in a follow-up X/Twitter post.
“This is the spirit I want to see fueling games in 2025,” he said, “developers uplifting one another, collaborating, and advancing the industry.”
Tales of Kenzera: Zau, a single-player Metroidvania, delves into themes of grief and love, earning a 7/10 in IGN’s review. We noted, “While its action doesn’t reinvent the genre, its poignant story about navigating loss elevates the experience.”
Despite positive reviews, Surgent Studios faced challenges, announcing layoffs in July and issuing redundancy notices in October due to funding issues. Pocketpair Publishing’s support could prove vital for the studio.
Meanwhile, Pocketpair continues to navigate a patent infringement lawsuit from The Pokémon Company and Nintendo, filed after Palworld’s massive sales success.
