Mark Hamill's surprise appearance as Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian stands as one of the most jaw-dropping moments in Star Wars history. During Star Wars Celebration, Rosario Dawson shared with us an incredible story about how she was completely in the dark about Hamill's cameo until he walked onto the set of The Book of Boba Fett.
To keep this monumental secret under wraps, showrunners Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau cleverly used Jedi Master Plo Koon as a decoy in the scripts, a tactic meant to throw off potential leaks. Dawson, like many fans, was baffled when she read about Plo Koon's supposed return in the script, especially given his dramatic demise in Revenge of the Sith. "I was like... I don't know... but people disappear and then they come back, so maybe it's possible?" Dawson mused. Her confusion turned to astonishment when Mark Hamill himself appeared on set, humorously dismissing the Plo Koon ruse by saying, "Plo Koon? That wouldn't even make sense!"
Filoni and Favreau expressed their regret for not informing Dawson sooner, with Filoni admitting, "I think we assumed you'd gotten told the right information," and Favreau adding, "That was bad on us!" They were deeply focused on keeping two major secrets for the show: Grogu's reveal at the end of the first episode and Luke Skywalker's dramatic entrance at the end of season two. Despite leaks plaguing other aspects of the production, they managed to keep these surprises intact. Unfortunately, this meant Dawson was left out of the loop.
Dawson took the mix-up in stride, laughing it off and saying, "I love it, they know I can't be trusted."
