RuneScape is inviting its players to make one of the most impactful decisions in the game's extensive history. Jagex has launched a major community vote, also known as the Treasure Hunter Poll, which could fundamentally transform how RuneScape approaches monetization.
What Are Your Thoughts on Microtransactions?
The classic MMO has launched an online page seeking player input. Starting today, you can cast your vote on whether Treasure Hunter, the game's microtransaction system, should be completely removed.
If the community vote surpasses 100,000 total votes, Jagex will eliminate Treasure Hunter. Additionally, they will remove over 220 gameplay-enhancing items that have been tied to the system for years.
This includes 225 direct experience and skilling items, leaving only two types of purchasable options available: capped Bonus XP per skill and cosmetic items that fit more naturally within the game's lore and aesthetic.
Beyond these changes, Jagex would commit to a year-long integrity roadmap addressing areas like the user interface, visual consistency, auras, and the widely discussed dailyscape mechanics. The initiative also introduces new cosmetic toggle features, offering players greater control over how cosmetics are displayed in the game.
Participate in the RuneScape Treasure Hunter Poll
Jagex describes this two-week voting period as a pivotal moment for RuneScape's future. The decision marks a significant shift toward what the developer calls a more integrity-focused edition of RuneScape, emphasizing in-game accomplishments over paid advantages.
Jon Bellamy, CEO of Jagex, reflected on the evolution of the game's approach to microtransactions. He noted that the central concern has always been that these systems allowed players to bypass core gameplay experiences, limiting their engagement with RuneScape's expansive world.
The voting period will remain active for 14 days. You can take part by visiting the poll page here. Alternatively, download the game through the Google Play Store.
