World of Warcraft's Corrupted Blood Bug Returns in Season of Discovery
The infamous Corrupted Blood incident, a notorious chapter in World of Warcraft history, has unexpectedly reappeared in the Season of Discovery servers. Players have shared videos showcasing the deadly plague spreading through major cities, sparking both amusement and concern, especially regarding its potential impact on Hardcore realms.
Initially introduced in September 2005 with Patch 1.7 (Rise of the Blood God), the Zul'Gurub raid, a 20-player instance featuring the boss Hakkar the Soulflayer, returned in Season of Discovery's Phase 5 (September 2024). Hakkar's Corrupted Blood spell, dealing damage over time and spreading to nearby players, was unintentionally reactivated. While normally manageable with strong healing, the bug allowed for widespread chaos.
For almost a month following Zul'Gurub's initial release, Corrupted Blood affected both players and their pets, enabling players to deliberately spread the plague outside the raid instance. A recent video on r/classicwow, posted by Lightstruckx, vividly demonstrates the debuff's rapid spread in Stormwind City's Trade District. The footage mirrors the 2005 incident, where "pet bombs" were used to spread the plague across the game world for weeks before Blizzard intervened.
The re-emergence of this bug has sparked debate among players. Some attribute it to unresolved issues, while others worry about its potential for exploitation in the Hardcore mode, where death is permanent. Unlike Season of Discovery, Hardcore mode's permadeath mechanic would force players to restart their characters after a Corrupted Blood encounter.
Despite past attempts to address this issue, the Corrupted Blood incident's legacy continues. With Season of Discovery's seventh phase slated for early 2025, the timing of Blizzard's fix remains uncertain.
