Shuttered MOBA Heroes of Newerth Might Be Coming Back

The beloved MOBA, Heroes of Newerth, which was shut down in 2022, might be poised for a surprising revival. Although no official announcements have been made, the game's developer has recently reactivated its social media presence after a three-year hiatus, sparking speculation and excitement among fans. This renewed activity suggests that Heroes of Newerth, a classic competitor to League of Legends and Dota 2, could be gearing up for a major announcement.

Following the success of the Warcraft 3 mod Dota, numerous studios ventured into developing their own MOBA titles, capitalizing on the engaging gameplay of two teams clashing to demolish each other's bases. Among the prominent MOBAs that emerged in the late 2000s and early 2010s were League of Legends, Dota 2, Heroes of the Storm, and Heroes of Newerth. Unfortunately, Heroes of Newerth struggled to maintain its competitive edge and ultimately closed its servers in 2022. However, recent developments hint at a possible return.

As a dedicated MOBA player, I often find myself drawn to the role of a top/off-lane bruiser. In League of Legends, champions like Aatrox and Mordekaiser are my go-to picks, while in Dota 2, I typically opt for Axe, Sven, or Tidehunter. If these roles are taken, I'm flexible and enjoy playing as a ranged carry, though mid and support roles are less preferred.

The first indication of a potential comeback for Heroes of Newerth came with a social media post. The official Twitter account, silent since December 2021 when Garena announced the game's closure, broke its silence with a "Happy NEW Year" message on January 1, emphasizing "NEW" in capitals. Additionally, the Heroes of Newerth website has been subtly updated, featuring a silhouette of the game's logo surrounded by animated particles.

Heroes of Newerth's Recent Social Media Activity Could Hint at a Comeback

This activity quickly captured the attention of the gaming community. Many fans reminisced about their fond memories of playing Heroes of Newerth, while others began to speculate about a possible revival, with comments like, "Don’t give me hope." The speculation intensified with a subsequent post on January 6, featuring an image of a cracking egg. This cryptic message fueled further excitement and led to various theories, including the possibility of integrating HoN heroes into Dota 2 or the development of a mobile version.

The recent social media activity surrounding Heroes of Newerth has undeniably reignited interest in the game. While the developer's plans remain undisclosed, the anticipation among fans is palpable. If the rumors hold true, it will be fascinating to see how Heroes of Newerth measures up against today's leading MOBA titles.
