Since the record-breaking release of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 last year, the modding community has been pushing the boundaries of what's possible within the game. The latest breakthrough from modder Tom, known as Warhammer Workshop, is nothing short of spectacular. Tom, the mastermind behind the Space Marine 2’s excellent Astartes Overhaul, has now released a 12-player co-op mode, transforming the gameplay into an experience akin to an MMO boss fight. Videos of multiple players battling a Tyranid Trygon Prime have left fans in awe.
Originally, Space Marine 2 only supported up to three-player co-op, making this new development a significant leap forward. What's even more remarkable is the support from the game's developer, Saber Interactive. Tom expressed his gratitude to IGN, stating, "Honestly, I’m just kind of in awe of Saber’s support for the modding community. None of us expected 12-player PvE sessions to be possible this soon — but somehow, here we are. Thanks to their generosity and trust, this huge leap forward is finally here, and it completely changes what we can do."
While the current 12-player co-op mod is still in its testing phase, it has already shown the potential to reshape the game's PvE balance. With nine more players than originally intended, the mod has opened up new possibilities for gameplay. Modders are now working on additional modes to complement this new feature, including prop hunt, PvP within operations, massive horde mode updates, and raid-style missions with challenging bosses and new mechanics.
The Space Marine 2 modding community has grown substantially, with approximately 20,000 active members in the main Discord server. Tom shared his enthusiasm, saying, "As both a modder and a player, it’s hard not to be excited. Huge credit as always to the Saber team for not just making all this possible, but continuing to drop amazing content of their own too, without any of the usual predatory battle-pass nonsense we take for granted in modern titles."
This 12-player co-op mod could offer a glimpse into the future of the series, especially with Space Marine 3 officially in development. Given the success of Space Marine 2, it's no surprise that the sequel is on the way. The promise of "large-scale battles that are even more spectacular" for Space Marine 3 hints at an increased player count, similar to what the modders have achieved.
As we await further news on Space Marine 3, the modding community continues to keep Space Marine 2 fresh and exciting. With the upcoming horde mode, new classes, operations maps, and weapons, the future looks bright for fans of the series.
