This Week's Top Pokémon Card Gainers and Losers - May 9

by Natalie May 22,2025

Another week brings another rollercoaster ride in the Pokémon single card market as trainers eagerly await the release of Destined Rivals. Thankfully, the Black Bolt and White Flare Pokémon Center preorders managed to dodge the usual bot frenzy this time around.

This week's most dramatic price drop belongs to Greninja ex 214/167, which has plummeted by nearly half its value since the start of the year. We're also witnessing significant price reductions across cards from the Obsidian Flames and the elusive 151 expansions. On the flip side, Dragonite V from Evolving Skies is experiencing a surge, nearly doubling in value compared to the beginning of the year. Its artwork, often considered undervalued, is a major factor in this rise.

Charizard V Alt Art continues to impress with its dynamic depiction of a battle against Venusaur, steadily climbing in value. Meanwhile, Rayquaza VMAX Alt Art is skyrocketing, gaining an additional $100 since the start of the year. Let's dive into the rest of the week's biggest climbers and crashers in the Pokémon TCG market.

Pokémon Card Crashes

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon CompanyWhile Sword and Shield era cards are finally on an upward trend, Scarlet and Violet series cards are returning to more realistic prices.

Alakazam ex SIR from 151 is a stunning card, now 34% cheaper than at the beginning of March. With such a significant discount, there's no reason not to add Uri Geller's Grandad to your collection this year.

Bulbasaur was my first starter Pokémon in Pokémon Blue, so Bulbasaur IR holds a special place in my heart. It has seen a dramatic 52% drop since mid-March, making it an irresistible addition to any collection.

In Obsidian Flames, Ninetales IR stands out as one of the set's best cards. With a 40% price drop since February, now is the perfect time to grab this beauty for just $18.17.

The biggest price crasher this month is Greninja ex SIR, once poised to be the most expensive Scarlet and Violet era card. However, with the arrival of Prismatic Evolutions, the FOMO has intensified. It remains a valuable card at $275, but that's a significant drop from its $411.62 price at the end of February.

Pokémon Card Climbers

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon CompanyMoving on to this week's climbers, Rayquaza VMAX alt art remains a coveted card from the Sword and Shield era. Already valued over $500, it's now at $649.99 and shows no signs of slowing down. It might even reach the $1,000 mark in a few years, so grab one if you can.

Charizard V Alt Art captures the essence of a battle with Venusaur, featuring a dynamic angle that sets it apart from static Pokémon card designs. It's increased by $40 since January and could easily surpass $200 before the year ends.

Pokémon Card Sealed Boosters

For those dedicated to pulling chase cards, here's what's currently in stock. Be cautious of prices above MSRP; it's a challenging time for Pokémon trainers, so avoid overpaying.

Here's the Pokémon TCG full Release Schedule for this year to ensure you don't miss any releases. Buying singles remains the most cost-effective way to collect, but remember, you don't need to "Catch 'Em All!"
