WWE 2K25: A Refined Wrestling Experience
2K's WWE series, revitalized in 2022, continues its iterative improvement with WWE 2K25. Promising additions like "The Island," a revamped story mode, and a new "Bloodline Rules" match type, were unfortunately unavailable for preview. However, my hands-on time focused on core gameplay and the updated Showcase Mode, revealed some promising refinements.
The Showcase Mode, centered around The Bloodline, offers three match types: recreating historical events, creating original matches, and – most excitingly – altering history. I experienced recreating Nia Jax's 2024 Queen of the Ring victory, creating a Wild Samoans vs. Dudley Boyz match, and altering a Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins bout. While enjoyable, the Showcase Mode still retains minor issues.
A significant improvement over previous iterations is the reduced reliance on lengthy real-life footage. While the "Slingshot" system isn't entirely gone, the in-engine recreations of key moments are shorter and less jarring, enhancing the overall experience. However, complete control was still relinquished during the final moments of the Nia Jax match, leaving me wanting more player agency in pivotal scenes.
The checklist system, a common complaint in previous games, remains, but is refined. Optional timed objectives reward players with cosmetics without penalizing failure, a positive change. The ability to alter historical match outcomes is a standout feature, adding replayability and a fresh perspective for fans.
Core gameplay retains the solid foundation of WWE 2K24, with minor but welcome additions. The return of chain wrestling introduces a mini-game for gaining an advantage during grapples, adding depth to the opening exchanges. The submission mini-game also returns, though it remains optional, along with other quick-time events.
Weapon throwing returns, expanded to new environments like the WWE archives, filled with historical items and Easter eggs. The inclusion of Prime Hydration bottles as weapons is a humorous touch. Most notably, intergender matches are now possible, opening up a wealth of previously unavailable matchups, coupled with the largest roster yet (300+ wrestlers).

A new "Underground" match type, a ropeless exhibition match in a Fight Club-esque setting, was briefly previewed, promising a unique experience. More details are forthcoming.
WWE 2K25 builds upon a solid foundation, adding incremental improvements rather than revolutionary changes. While the larger updates remain unseen, the refinements present suggest another strong entry in the series, likely appealing to wrestling fans.
