'It Does Real Harm to Artists of All Kinds' — Balatro Dev Localthunk Steps In to Resolve AI Art Reddit Fiasco

Localthunk, the developer behind the popular roguelike poker game Balatro, intervened in a dispute on the game's subreddit regarding a moderator's stance on AI-generated art. The former moderator, DrTankHead, had previously stated that AI art would be permitted on both the main and NSFW Balatro subreddits, provided it was properly labeled. This statement, however, contradicted Localthunk's and publisher Playstack's views.

Localthunk swiftly responded on Bluesky, clarifying that neither they nor Playstack endorsed the use of AI-generated imagery. A subsequent statement on the subreddit confirmed DrTankHead's removal from the moderation team and announced a ban on AI-generated images. Localthunk emphasized their opposition to AI art due to its perceived harm to human artists. The developer pledged to update the subreddit's rules and FAQ to reflect this change.

Playstack's communications director acknowledged the ambiguity of the previous rules, suggesting that the phrasing "no unlabeled AI content" may have been misinterpreted. The remaining moderators are working to clarify the subreddit's policy.

DrTankHead, in a post on the NSFW Balatro subreddit, confirmed their removal and stated that while they didn't intend to make the subreddit AI-centric, they were considering a schedule allowing non-NSFW AI-generated art on specific days. One user responded by suggesting DrTankHead take a break from Reddit.

The controversy highlights the ongoing debate surrounding generative AI in the video game industry. This debate is fueled by ethical concerns, copyright issues, and the inconsistent quality of AI-generated content. Keywords Studios' failed experiment in creating an entirely AI-driven game serves as a cautionary tale, underscoring the limitations of current AI technology and its inability to fully replace human talent. Despite this, major players like EA and Capcom are actively exploring AI's potential, while Activision has admitted to using generative AI for some assets in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, sparking controversy over its use.
