Sony has announced an update regarding the limited-time classic PlayStation console themes for PS5, covering PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4. These beloved themes, which added nostalgic imagery and sounds from past consoles, are leaving the PS5 store tomorrow, January 31st, 2025.
However, Sony assures fans that this isn't a permanent goodbye. Due to the overwhelmingly positive response, they're working to bring these special designs back in the coming months. The tweet confirming their return states: “Thank you for the fantastic response to the classic PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 limited-time console themes, which will be leaving tomorrow. Due to the positive response on these 4 themes, we’re doing some work behind the scenes to bring these special designs back in the months ahead.”
Unfortunately, there's a downside. Sony has also confirmed that there are currently no plans to release additional themes beyond these four classic console designs. Their statement reads: “While there aren’t plans to create additional themes in the future, we're excited to keep celebrating legacy PlayStation hardware with you all.”
This news has understandably disappointed some fans, as the PS5 notably lacks the extensive theme customization options available on previous PlayStation consoles. The temporary themes, released in celebration of PlayStation's 30th anniversary on December 3rd, 2024, allowed users to personalize their PS5 home screen and menus with the iconic visuals and sounds of the PSOne (featuring the classic console on the background), PS2 (its menu shapes), PS3 (its wave background), and PS4 (similar wave patterns).
