"Dishonored 2 Receives Unexpected Update 9 Years Post-Launch"

Summary

  • Dishonored 2 unexpectedly received a small update for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
  • The patch is quite small and appears to include bug fixes and language updates.
  • Arkane Lyon is currently working on Marvel's Blade.

Dishonored 2, one of the most highly acclaimed Bethesda games from the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 era, has surprised fans with an unexpected update. Released towards the end of 2016, this sequel to the beloved 2012 original introduced a new playable character, Emily Kaldwin. The game's standout missions, such as The Clockwork Mansion and A Crack in the Slab, captivated players with their innovative gameplay and detailed settings.

Arkane Lyon, the studio behind Dishonored 2, also developed the critically acclaimed Deathloop in 2021. Meanwhile, their sister studio, Arkane Austin, faced closure in 2024 alongside other teams like Roundhouse Studios, Alpha Dog Games, and Tango Gameworks—although Tango was later revived by Korean publisher Krafton. Arkane Austin was responsible for the original Dishonored, the 2017 sci-fi adventure Prey, and the 2023 co-op looter shooter Redfall, which received mixed reviews. Thankfully, Arkane Lyon remains operational and is currently focused on developing Marvel's Blade in collaboration with Marvel Games.

Out of the blue, fans noticed a small update for Dishonored 2 across Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam. This update, weighing just 230MB, primarily seems to address minor bugs and update language depots, according to SteamDB. However, on Xbox, it necessitates a full 40GB game update.

Dishonored 2 Receives a Surprise New Update, but Not a 60 FPS Mode

The exact purpose of this unexpected update remains somewhat unclear, but it has left many fans disappointed as it doesn't include the performance boost they've been eagerly awaiting. While most other Arkane titles can run at 60 FPS on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, Dishonored 2 remains capped at 30 FPS. Notably, even the original Dishonored and the 2017 standalone expansion, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, benefit from performance enhancements on modern consoles. There's speculation that Arkane Lyon might release a 60 FPS patch for Dishonored 2 to coincide with its tenth anniversary in 2026, though fans are skeptical about waiting so long for such an update.

The community's desire for a third mainline Dishonored game persists, but with the closure of Arkane Austin, any new entry would likely be years away, if it happens at all. Currently, Arkane Lyon's focus is on their upcoming third-person game, Marvel's Blade, which has yet to receive a release date.
