On July 18th, 1047 Games unveiled a stunning cinematic trailer for Splitgate 2. This free-to-play sequel builds upon the success of the original, aiming for long-term appeal. CEO Ian Proulx stated their goal is to "create a game that endures for a decade or more," requiring a refined gameplay loop beyond the original's arena shooter inspiration. Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing, highlighted a reimagined portal system, striving for both accessibility and depth.
While details remain scarce, Splitgate 2 will utilize Unreal Engine 5 and introduce a faction system. Expect a fresh take on the familiar formula, promising a vastly different experience from its predecessor. The game will launch in 2025 on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
Known for its unique blend of Halo-style combat and Portal's portal mechanics, Splitgate's original success stemmed from a well-received demo, garnering 600,000 downloads in a single month. The game's popularity led to server upgrades and an extended early access period before its official launch in September 2022. Development then shifted to Splitgate 2, promising a revolutionary, not evolutionary, update.
New Factions, Maps, and Characters
The trailer showcased the Sol Splitgate League and three distinct factions: Aeros (dash-based mobility), Meridian (tactical time manipulation), and Sabrask (brute force). While not a hero shooter, these factions will add strategic depth.
Gameplay details will be revealed at Gamescom 2024 (August 21st-25th), but the trailer offers a glimpse into the game's visuals, weapons, and portal mechanics, including the return of dual-wielding.
