Apple Forced to Allow Sideloading in Brazil

by Natalie Mar 12,2025

A Brazilian court has ordered Apple to allow sideloading on iOS devices within 90 days. This follows similar rulings in other countries, and Apple plans to appeal. Sideloading enables users to install apps directly onto their iPhones, mirroring the Android APK system.

Apple's long-standing opposition to sideloading, citing privacy concerns, has been challenged repeatedly. The Epic Games lawsuit, filed over five years ago, significantly highlighted these concerns. Apple's App Tracking Transparency (ATT) changes in 2022, while presented as a privacy enhancement, also faced regulatory scrutiny due to exemptions for Apple itself.

Despite Apple's privacy arguments, the tide seems to be turning against its restrictive ecosystem. Recent rulings in Vietnam and the broader EU suggest a global shift toward greater app store openness. While Apple will likely continue its legal fight, the future of its walled garden appears increasingly uncertain.
