Capcom revealed they are focusing on reviving classic IPs, starting with the Okami and Onimusha series. Read on to learn more about their plans and which classic series might be getting the spotlight soon.
Capcom Will Continue Reviving Classic IPs
Starting with Okami and Onimusha
In Capcom's press release on December 13 regarding the announcement of the new Onimusha and Okami games, the company revealed they will continue working on past IPs to release high-quality content for players.
The latest Onimusha game will be released in 2026, set during the Edo period in Kyoto. Capcom also announced a new sequel for Okami, but its release date is still under wraps. This game will be co-developed by the directors and development team from the original game.
“Capcom is focusing on re-activating dormant IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently,” the company said. “The company is working to further enhance corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content, which includes reviving past IPs like the two titles announced above, in order to continuously produce highly efficient, high-quality titles.”
The company is also currently working on Monster Hunter Wilds and Capcom Fighting Collection 2, both slated to release in 2025. Despite this announcement, Capcom is still working on new games. Recently, it released games like Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess and Exoprimal.
Capcom’s Super Elections Might Reveal Future Titles
Last February 2024, Capcom held a “Super Election” where players could vote on their favorite characters and the sequels they wanted to see the most. After a round of voting, Capcom revealed the most requested sequels and remakes from the company. Some of these series are Dino Crisis, Darkstalkers, Onimusha, and Breath of Fire.
The Dino Crisis and Darkstalkers series received little to no attention for decades, with their last installments released in 1997 and 2003, respectively. Meanwhile, Breath of Fire 6, an online RPG, was launched in July 2016 but remained active for only more than a year after shutting down in September 2017. As a result, most of these well-known franchises have remained dormant for a long time and may be due for a remaster or sequel.
Though Capcom remained tightlipped about what series to reactivate, the recent “Super Elections” might give some insight into what dormant IPs the company might release in the future as players also voted for Onimusha and Okami.
