Supermassive Games Announces Layoffs and Directive 8020 Delay

Studio Workforce Reduction and Project Delay

Supermassive Games, the British developer behind acclaimed titles like Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology series, has announced workforce reductions affecting up to 36 employees. This marks the studio's second round of layoffs in 2024 following previous job cuts announced in March.

Strategic Restructuring Amid Industry Challenges

The studio's social media statement cited the need to realign its team structure with "the challenging and evolving games industry landscape." Considering Supermassive employed approximately 350 staff in 2023, these latest cuts mean about one-third of its workforce has been affected across eighteen months.

Directive 8020 Release Window Extended

Alongside the restructuring announcement, Supermassive confirmed its anticipated sci-fi horror title Directive 8020 will now launch in early 2026 rather than its originally planned release window. Executive Producer Traci Tufte stated: "This additional development time allows us to refine the experience while maintaining our commitment to quality storytelling."

The Dark Pictures Anthology Update

Originally revealed in 2022 as part of The Dark Pictures Anthology, Directive 8020 represents a more standalone chapter in the horror series. While maintaining classic Supermassive gameplay elements, the project reportedly features narrative innovations distinct from previous entries.

Little Nightmares 3 Development Unaffected

The studio confirmed its October 2025 release date for Little Nightmares 3 remains unchanged, with development proceeding separately from these organizational changes. Fans can anticipate new gameplay reveals ahead of the fall launch.

Series Background and Future Direction

The Dark Pictures Anthology debuted in 2019 with Man of Medan, followed by annual installments through 2022's The Devil in Me. While originally conceived as an annual series, Supermassive appears to be shifting toward more substantial development cycles between releases.

Supermassive emphasized its continued dedication to horror storytelling while adapting to current market realities. The development team reaffirmed its commitment to delivering high-quality narrative experiences despite the restructuring.
