The free-to-play 3v3 tactical shooter, *Spectre Divide*, will be shutting down just six months after its debut in September 2024, and shortly after its release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game's developer, Mountaintop Studios, is also closing its doors. Moutaintop CEO Nate Mitchell confirmed the news in a statement on social media today, citing insufficient success following the Season 1 launch to keep the game and the studio operational.

Despite an optimistic start with around 400,000 players and a peak concurrent count of approximately 10,000 across all platforms in the first week, the game struggled to maintain active players and generate enough revenue to cover its ongoing costs. Mitchell's statement revealed that since the PC launch, the studio had exhausted its remaining capital and was unable to secure further funding through a publisher, additional investment, or acquisition. He noted the challenging state of the industry as a contributing factor to their struggles.
*Spectre Divide* will be taken offline within the next 30 days, and any money spent by players since the Season 1 launch will be refunded. This news contradicts earlier reports from October 2024, where Mitchell had assured that the game "isn’t going anywhere," claiming that Mountaintop had the funds to support Spectre for a long time.
IGN’s positive preview of *Spectre Divide* in August 2024 praised the game's innovative Duality system, which allowed players to control two characters during matches. However, the rapid shutdown of *Spectre Divide* follows a trend of other live-service game failures, including Rocksteady’s *Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League* and Sony’s *Concord*.
