The upcoming Monopoly movie from Lionsgate has secured its writers, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who are known for their work on Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The announcement today confirms that Daley and Goldstein will pen the screenplay for the film, which is based on Hasbro's iconic board game. Margot Robbie, through her production company LuckyChap, will produce the film.
In addition to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Daley and Goldstein have recently written and directed their original film Mayday. They also contributed to the scripts for The Flash and Spider-Man: Homecoming, showcasing their versatility in the genre.
The idea of a Monopoly film has been floating around for years, with notable mentions including Ridley Scott's interest in directing back in 2007. Scott had enlisted Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski to write the script in 2011, but that project did not come to fruition. Subsequent attempts in 2015 involved Lionsgate and Hasbro with a script by Andrew Niccol, and later in 2019, it was reported that Kevin Hart and director Tim Story would be part of the project.
However, it appears that none of these previous efforts will materialize, as Lionsgate's recent acquisition of eOne from Hasbro has sparked a fresh start for the Monopoly film. With Daley and Goldstein at the helm of the screenplay, fans can hope that this version will finally "pass Go" and bring the beloved board game to life on the big screen.
