Switch 2 VRR Limited to Handheld Mode: Nintendo

by Liam Aug 10,2026

Back in early April, Nintendo Switch 2 enthusiasts spotted references to variable refresh rate (VRR) on official console information pages before they were abruptly removed. Nintendo has now clarified exactly how VRR functionality works on its upcoming handheld hybrid.

In an official statement to NintendoLife, Nintendo clarified the initial website information was erroneous: "The Nintendo Switch 2 currently supports VRR exclusively in handheld mode. We regret the inaccurate information that originally appeared on our website."

When questioned about potential VRR support for docked mode via firmware updates, Nintendo responded that it currently has "no announcements to share regarding this matter."

This confirmation means while portable players will benefit from VRR technology at launch, those playing primarily in TV mode won't have access to this display enhancement feature initially.

The clarification follows weeks of speculation after the original VRR references were first discovered then systematically scrubbed from Nintendo's online presence - a removal process meticulously documented by Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie.

While the lack of docked VRR might disappoint some prospective buyers, history suggests potential for future implementation. Sony notably added VRR support to PlayStation 5 through post-launch firmware updates, establishing precedent for similar Nintendo updates.

In related Nintendo Switch 2 developments, the company recently revealed several Switch titles receiving complimentary performance enhancements for the new hardware, including Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser additionally confirmed the company expects to maintain "strong hardware availability throughout the holiday season."
