Payday 3's highly anticipated offline mode arrives later this month, but with a surprising caveat: an internet connection is still required. This announcement follows considerable player backlash over the game's initial launch lacking offline play, a staple of the series.
The Payday franchise, known for its cooperative FPS gameplay and intricate heist mechanics, debuted in 2011 with Payday: The Heist. The series emphasizes teamwork and strategic options, from stealthy approaches to all-out assaults. Payday 3 enhanced stealth capabilities, providing players with increased flexibility. The upcoming "Boys in Blue" update introduces a new heist and addresses player concerns.
The June 27th update introduces a beta version of the offline mode, focusing on improving the solo experience. While a fully offline mode is planned for the future, this initial iteration requires an online connection. However, it removes the need for matchmaking, a key grievance among solo players. Other missing features, such as the Safehouse, also drew criticism.
Payday 3's New Offline Mode (Beta)
Starbreeze emphasizes the offline mode's ongoing development and plans to refine it based on player feedback. Almir Listo, Head of Community and Global Brand Director, confirmed this iterative approach. The update also includes a new heist, free items, and improvements, such as a new LMG, three masks, and custom loadout naming.
Payday 3's troubled launch, plagued by server issues, prompted an apology from Starbreeze CEO Tobias Sjögren. Subsequent updates addressed various issues. Criticism also targeted the limited launch content (eight heists). Future heists will be added, though they'll be paid DLC, as seen with the $10 "Syntax Error" heist.
