Sony Reboots Starship Troopers After Helldivers Movie Announcement

by Grace Mar 29,2025

Sony is reportedly developing a new adaptation of the classic military sci-fi novel "Starship Troopers" by Robert A. Heinlein, with Neill Blomkamp set to write and direct. This news has been confirmed by reputable sources such as The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, and Variety. Unlike the 1997 cult classic directed by Paul Verhoeven, which satirized the novel, Blomkamp's version aims to stay true to Heinlein's original work and is not connected to the previous film.

Interestingly, Sony's decision to greenlight this project comes shortly after announcing a live-action adaptation of the popular PlayStation game "Helldivers," which draws significant inspiration from Verhoeven's "Starship Troopers." Both films will feature themes of soldiers battling alien bugs, but Blomkamp's take on "Starship Troopers" will focus on the source material's tone, which some interpret as promoting the ideals that Verhoeven's film satirized.

As of now, neither the new "Starship Troopers" nor the "Helldivers" movie has a confirmed release date, leaving fans to eagerly await further updates. Blomkamp's most recent project was the Sony-produced "Gran Turismo," an adaptation of the renowned PlayStation racing simulation series.
