Ubisoft Restarts Project Maverick Development: Rumors

by Owen Mar 28,2025

According to a report by Insider Gaming, the extraction shooter set in the Far Cry universe and taking place in Alaska has undergone a complete reboot. Originally codenamed Project Maverick, the game was initially planned as a multiplayer expansion for Far Cry 7. However, after an internal review, Ubisoft decided to make significant changes to its development. Despite receiving positive feedback from employees and testers, Ubisoft's management chose to redirect most resources to Project Blackbird, which is Far Cry 7. The reassignment of the technical team to other projects marked the end of the multiplayer component.

The project's responsibility has now shifted to Ubisoft Sherbrooke, a studio known for its development support. Almost the entire original team has been reassigned to work on the next installment of the Far Cry series.

Insider Tom Henderson revealed in mid-December 2024 that Far Cry 7 aims to immerse players in an atmosphere of tension and desperation, with time as the main adversary. The game's narrative will center on the protagonist's mission to rescue their family, kidnapped by a mysterious conspiracy cult that is conducting terrifying experiments with hallucinogens on animals and children. Players must complete this rescue within a strict time limit of 72 in-game hours, which translates to 24 real-time hours, making time a critical gameplay element that adds urgency and intensity to the experience.

A unique feature of Far Cry 7 will be a timer displayed on the protagonist's wristwatch, constantly reminding players of the ticking clock. This feature not only increases the sense of urgency but also adds pressure, compelling players to make quick and strategic decisions. Far Cry 7 is set to offer a distinctive gaming experience where every second counts, and every decision can have significant consequences.
