Critical Role Video Game Announcement Could Arrive 'Any Day,' Travis Willingham Confirms

by Emery Apr 03,2025

The popular Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, is on the cusp of unveiling its first major video game, with CEO Travis Willingham hinting that an announcement could come "any day." In a recent interview with Business Insider, the team shared their ambitious plans for the future. While details about the game's title and its connection to the Critical Role universe remain under wraps, Willingham assured that the development team is diligently working on the project.

Willingham, who is not only an actor but also a star of Critical Role, described the upcoming video game as an interactive experience where players will have the power to influence the story's outcome. "They'll actually be getting their hand on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria," he explained.

Critical Role was co-founded by Willingham alongside other renowned voice actors such as Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, and Matthew Mercer. Since its launch, the show has expanded into a vast universe, with one of its most successful ventures being the Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.

The upcoming video game will complement Critical Role's existing projects but may not directly tie into them. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham mentioned that the team was in "active pursuit" of creating a Critical Role video game spinoff, indicating they were nearing the end of a multi-year development journey. It's still uncertain whether the game will follow one of the group's existing campaigns or introduce an original story within the Critical Role world.

Originally, the team anticipated making an announcement by the end of 2024 or early 2025. Now, as we progress into 2025, the announcement seems imminent. Willingham reflected on their cautious approach to the gaming industry, stating to Rolling Stone, "Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels. You know, there’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."

While no release date for the Critical Role video game has been set, fans can stay engaged by checking out the first details on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4.
