Helldivers 2's recent "Escalation of Freedom" update has revitalized its player base on Steam, dramatically increasing concurrent players after a period of decline. Let's explore the update and its impact.
Helldivers 2 Player Count Soars
A Doubled Player Base Thanks to the "Escalation of Freedom" Update
Following the release of the "Escalation of Freedom" update, Helldivers 2 saw its concurrent player count double, jumping from a consistent average of 30,000 to a peak of 62,819 within 24 hours.
This resurgence is attributed to the update's substantial content additions. New enemies (Impaler and Rocket Tank), a challenging "Super Helldive" difficulty setting, expanded and more rewarding outposts, new missions and objectives, anti-griefing measures, and quality-of-life improvements have all contributed to the game's renewed appeal. The launch of the "Warbond" battle pass on August 8th further fuels player engagement.
Despite this positive trend, the update hasn't been without criticism. Many players cite increased difficulty due to weapon nerfs and enemy buffs as detracting from the overall experience. Reports of game-breaking bugs and crashes have also surfaced, leading to a mixed reception on Steam, although the game currently holds a "Mostly Positive" rating.
The Previous Player Dip: A Closer Look
Prior to the update, Helldivers 2 maintained a robust Steam community, averaging 30,000 concurrent players daily – a significant number for a live-service title. However, this represented a considerable decrease from its initial peak popularity.
The game initially reached hundreds of thousands of concurrent players on Steam, peaking at 458,709. This sharp decline was largely attributed to Sony's initial requirement to link Steam accounts with PlayStation Network accounts in May, effectively locking out players in 177 countries without PSN access. While Sony reversed this decision, the access issue for these regions remains unresolved, three months later. Arrowhead Game Studios CEO, Johan Pilestedt, has acknowledged the ongoing efforts to restore access.
