Marvel Rivals Issues Apology for Unfair Bans; Players Advocate for Rank-Inclusive Character Bans
NetEase, the developer of Marvel Rivals, issued a public apology for mistakenly banning numerous innocent players. The incident involved a mass ban targeting suspected cheaters, which inadvertently flagged several non-Windows users employing compatibility layers like those used on macOS, Linux, and Steam Deck.
The erroneous bans, implemented on January 3rd, were subsequently lifted after NetEase identified the cause. The company apologized for the inconvenience and encouraged players to report actual cheating behavior while offering an appeal process for wrongful bans. The reliance on compatibility layers, particularly Proton for SteamOS, has been highlighted as a potential trigger for anti-cheat systems.
Separately, a significant player outcry concerns the game's character ban mechanic, currently limited to Diamond rank and above. Players, particularly those in lower ranks, express frustration at the lack of this feature, arguing it would enhance gameplay balance and strategic depth across all skill levels. One Reddit user, Expert_Recover_7050, voiced the sentiment that lower-ranked players lack the tools to counter overpowered character choices, unlike their higher-ranked counterparts.
Many players believe implementing character bans in all ranks would provide valuable learning opportunities for newer players, encourage more diverse team compositions, and ultimately improve the overall gaming experience. While NetEase hasn't yet publicly responded to this feedback, the demand for a rank-inclusive character ban system remains strong within the Marvel Rivals community.
