Tides of Annihilation Arthurian Knights Concept is Tencent's Appeal to Westerners

In a recent interview with Wccftech at Gamescom 2024, the developers at Eclipse Glow Games delved into the inspiration and future plans for their upcoming action-adventure game, Tides of Annihilation. The game's unique setting and thematic elements are designed to appeal to a Western audience, and here's what we learned about its concept and what's in store.

Tides of Annihilation Aims For A Western Audience

The Central Concept Of Arthurian Myths And Knights

Eclipse Glow Games, a China-based studio, has chosen to set Tides of Annihilation in a Western context due to the strategic direction set by their financial backer, Tencent. The producer explained, "This game and Black Myth: Wukong are two projects invested in by Tencent, and there were different expectations set on these two projects. Black Myth: Wukong targeted the Chinese market, but for this project, we targeted a Western audience, so we chose the Arthurian legends." The game's narrative revolves around the iconic imagery of knights, specifically King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.

Set in a post-apocalyptic modern-day London, Tides of Annihilation follows the journey of the heroine, Gwendolyn, who appears to be the last human survivor after an Outworld invasion. The game blends an alternate modern setting with fantasy elements drawn directly from Arthurian myths, creating a rich and immersive world for players to explore.

Devil May Cry-inspired Combat And Over 30 Bosses

The gameplay of Tides of Annihilation has been likened to the classic Devil May Cry series, a comparison that the developers embrace. They stated, "It's definitely more like Devil May Cry" but with a customizable difficulty setting to cater to a broader audience. The combat system features simple controls, making it accessible even to those who are not hardcore action gamers.

Players can customize their combat style through different playstyles, choosing from four weapons and employing over ten different Knights as sidekicks. Gwendolyn, the protagonist, can command the legendary Knights of the Round Table, adding a strategic layer to the gameplay as they navigate through a devastated London. With over 30 unique bosses to battle, players are in for a challenging yet rewarding experience. "Players will have to prepare for very challenging boss fights," the developers emphasized.

Plans Of Creating An Anthology

Looking to the future, Eclipse Glow Games expressed interest in expanding Tides of Annihilation into an anthology series. They aim to explore different settings and mythologies, each potentially featuring a new protagonist. "But we would still want to use the Outworld invasion concept that we're using for Tides of Annihilation," they noted, suggesting that this theme could serve as the unifying thread for the anthology. The success of the initial title is crucial to realizing this vision and bringing more mythologies and stories to life.

Tides of Annihilation is currently in its beta phase, with a planned release window of 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Players will follow Gwendolyn as she battles against fate to save not only London but also the mythical realm of Avalon, which seems to be merging with the real world.
