The choice to make two of the six clans in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 exclusive to a DLC add-on pack is a "business" decision, according to publisher Paradox.
Bloodlines 2's clan selection has been a topic of discussion among fans. Initial details revealed the game would launch with four clans: Brujah, Tremere, Banu Haqim, and Ventrue. This offers four distinct starting paths for players, but it's a smaller roster compared to the original cult classic Bloodlines, which featured seven clans.
Responding to player feedback, developer The Chinese Room added two more clans—Lasombra and Toreador. However, these are only accessible through the Shadows and Silk add-on pack, priced at $21.99 as DLC or included in the $89.99 Premium Edition. The standard edition is $59.99.
This DLC is available at launch, creating a perception that the "complete" lineup has been segmented. Only players who pay extra get the full roster from day one. This has left some fans disappointed, especially since the Toreador clan was a playable option in the original Bloodlines and holds significant weight in the Vampire: The Masquerade lore.
During Gamescom 2025, IGN asked Paradox why the Lasombra and Toreador clans are tied to the add-on pack. The publisher stated that additional content is common in games, but fulfilling fan requests comes with development costs.
"The team made these two clans available at launch while ensuring the core experience remains with the initial four," a Paradox representative explained. "We heard the community loud and clear—they really wanted these specific clans. It was a highly requested feature."
"From a business perspective, game development requires time and resources," they continued. "This is additional content that was developed. By offering it on day one instead of weeks later, we're making it immediately available for the players who have been asking for it. It's a business reality, but it provides immediate access without a long wait."
As noted, the demand for these clans was significant. However, integrating them required substantial effort. Ian Thomas, narrative director at The Chinese Room, elaborated on the process.
"We've spent the last couple of years extending the development timeline precisely to incorporate and refine these kinds of additions, enriching the game's world and narrative based on community input," Thomas said.
"When players express strong interest in something, we listen. Sometimes we decide it doesn't fit the artistic vision. Other times, we agree it would be a great addition and ask Paradox for more time to include it. They've been supportive in those cases, granting extra development weeks to make it happen."
Those additional weeks, among other factors, contributed to Bloodlines 2's current release date of October 21, 2025. While the wait for this beloved sequel has been long, it now arrives with six clans—though not all are included in the base price. As mentioned, some fans remain unsatisfied with the decision to gate these character-defining options behind DLC.
Despite the controversy surrounding this move, hands-on impressions from several quests leave us optimistic about Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2. It's rich in atmosphere and introduces clever mechanics for vampire powers and navigating a modern city as an undead predator.
