Discover Poisoned Pocket Mechanic in Pokémon TCG

by Emily Feb 10,2025

This guide explores the intricacies of the Poisoned condition in Pokémon TCG Pocket, detailing its effects, applicable cards, countermeasures, and optimal deck-building strategies.

Quick Navigation

Pokémon TCG Pocket incorporates the Special Condition "Poisoned," mirroring the tabletop game. This effect gradually depletes an Active Pokémon's HP until it faints or the condition is removed. This guide clarifies how Poisoned works, which cards inflict it, how to counteract it, and how to leverage it for strategic advantage.

Understanding 'Poisoned'

Poisoned is a Special Condition inflicting 10 HP damage at the end of each round. This damage is calculated during the round's Checkup phase and persists until cured or the Pokémon faints. It doesn't resolve automatically or through chance. While it can combine with other Special Conditions, multiple Poisoned effects don't stack; a Pokémon only loses 10 HP per turn regardless of how many times it's inflicted. However, this status can be exploited by certain Pokémon like Muk, which inflicts bonus damage against Poisoned opponents.

Cards with the Poisoned Ability

In the Genetic Apex expansion, these five cards inflict the Poisoned status:

  • Weezing
  • Grimer
  • Nidoking
  • Tentacruel
  • Venomoth

Grimer stands out as an efficient Basic Pokémon, poisoning opponents with a single Energy. Weezing is another strong contender, using its "Gas Leak" ability (no Energy required) while Active.

Explore Pokémon TCG Pocket's Rental Decks for Poison-focused options; Koga's deck, featuring Grimer and Arbok, offers a solid starting point.

Curing the Poisoned Status

Three methods exist to counter the Poisoned effect:

  1. Evolution: Evolving a Poisoned Pokémon removes the condition.
  2. Retreat: Moving a Poisoned Pokémon to the Bench halts HP loss.
  3. Item Cards: Cards like Potion heal HP, extending survivability but not curing Poisoned itself.

Crafting the Best Poison Deck

While not a top-tier archetype, a potent Poison deck can be built around the synergy of Grimer, Arbok, and Muk. The strategy involves rapid poisoning with Grimer, enemy lock-down with Arbok, and maximizing Muk's damage against Poisoned opponents (up to 120 HP).

Here's a sample META deck leveraging these synergies:

Poisoned Deck Composition

Card Quantity Effect
Grimer x2 Inflicts Poisoned
Ekans x2 Evolves into Arbok
Arbok x2 Locks opponent's Active Pokémon
Muk x2 Deals 120 DMG to Poisoned Pokémon
Koffing x2 Evolves into Weezing
Weezing x2 Inflicts Poisoned via Ability ("Gas Leak")
Koga x2 Returns Active Weezing or Muk to hand
Poké Ball x2 Draws a Basic Pokémon
Professor's Research x2 Draws two cards
Sabrina x1 Forces opponent's Active Pokémon to Retreat
X Speed x1 Reduces Retreat cost

Alternative strategies include incorporating Jigglypuff (PA) and Wigglytuff ex, or a slower, high-damage approach with the Nidoking evolution line (Nidoran, Nidorino, Nidoking).
