Deadlock's 2025 Update Schedule: Fewer, Bigger Patches
Valve has announced a shift in its update strategy for Deadlock in 2025, moving towards larger, less frequent patches. While 2024 saw a consistent flow of updates, the developer cited internal development challenges and the need for more time between updates to allow changes to settle. This change doesn't signal a slowdown in development, but rather a strategic adjustment to improve the overall quality and impact of future updates.
Deadlock, Valve's free-to-play MOBA, launched earlier in 2024 and quickly gained traction in the competitive hero-shooter market, even facing off against heavyweights like Marvel Rivals. Its unique steampunk aesthetic and polished gameplay have contributed to its success. However, maintaining the previous two-week update cycle proved unsustainable.
According to a statement by Valve developer Yoshi on the official Deadlock Discord, the new approach will involve larger patches released less frequently, with hotfixes deployed as needed. The recent winter update, featuring unique gameplay changes, serves as a preview of this new direction, hinting at the potential for future limited-time events and modes.
This change is likely to impact players who enjoyed the constant stream of updates in 2024. However, the promise of larger, more substantial updates that feel like significant events rather than minor adjustments should offer a compelling alternative. Deadlock currently boasts 22 playable characters, with an additional 8 available in Hero Labs mode. Its innovative anti-cheat measures and diverse roster have also contributed to its positive reception.
While an official release date remains unannounced, Valve promises further news and updates for Deadlock throughout 2025.
