Avowed's game director offers a detailed preview of the game's intricate gameplay and multiple endings, ahead of its anticipated 2025 release.
Avowed: Intricate Gameplay and Multiple Endings
Navigating Political Intrigue in The Living Lands
Obsidian Entertainment's Avowed promises players "continuous opportunities to express and explore their character's alignment" through complex, multi-ending gameplay. In an interview with Game Developer, game director Carrie Patel highlighted that every decision, big or small, contributes to the overall player experience."It's about providing players with constant opportunities to shape their character's path," Patel explained. "The game encourages players to be mindful of each moment, asking themselves: 'When am I engaged? When am I curious? When does my interest wane? What keeps me invested?'"
Patel emphasized that choices and outcomes in Avowed are directly tied to exploration within the detailed world of Eora, specifically the politically charged Living Lands. "I've enjoyed weaving together the narratives of these two worlds," she added.
Players take on the role of an Aedyran Empire envoy, investigating a spiritual plague while simultaneously pursuing their own political ambitions. "Meaningful roleplay comes from giving players something to delve into," Patel noted. "It's about defining who you want to be in this world and how your actions reflect that."
Beyond the complex RPG mechanics, the game features strategic combat that blends magic, swords, and firearms. "The abilities and weapon combinations you choose create a vastly different experience each playthrough," Patel stated.
Furthermore, Patel confirmed to IGN that the numerous endings offer a wide array of possibilities. She explained, "We have a double-digit number of ending slides, and many different combinations are possible. True to Obsidian's style, your ending is a direct reflection of your choices throughout the game, shaped by the content you encountered and your actions within it."
