Update on the Shadow of the Colossus Movie Adaptation
Director Andy Muschietti recently offered an update on the long-awaited film adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus, assuring fans the project is not dead. While development began over a decade ago (Sony announced it in 2009, with Fumito Ueda, the game's director, involved), the director cited budgetary concerns and the complexities of adapting such a beloved and unique IP as reasons for the extended production timeline. He confirmed the existence of a preferred script among several versions.
This adaptation announcement comes alongside Sony's recent unveiling of several other game adaptations at CES 2025, including a Helldivers film, a Horizon Zero Dawn movie, and a Ghost of Tsushima animated feature.
Muschietti, known for his work on the It remakes and The Flash, clarified on Radio TU's La Baulera del Coso that the film's delays stem from factors beyond creative control, emphasizing the significant popularity and resulting budgetary considerations of adapting such a highly regarded property. He acknowledged his own lack of extensive gaming experience but praised the game as a "masterpiece," stating he's played it multiple times.
The enduring legacy of Shadow of the Colossus, a critically acclaimed open-world title with a melancholic narrative, is evident in its influence on other games, such as Capcom's Dragon's Dogma 2. While high-definition remakes were released on PlayStation 4 in 2018, Muschietti's involvement aims to bring the game's unique atmosphere and iconic colossi to a wider audience, both captivating existing fans and introducing newcomers to its compelling world. The director's commitment, coupled with the recent flurry of Sony's game adaptations, suggests renewed momentum for this long-awaited project.
