Bungie confirms Marathon's launch date during its major gameplay reveal event. Discover what's coming in this extraction shooter and learn about the upcoming Closed Alpha Playtest opportunities.
Marathon Arrives September 23
The Return to Tau Ceti

The creators of Destiny and Halo unveiled their ambitious extraction shooter Marathon during April 13's gameplay showcase. This PvPvE experience pits six teams of three players against each other and hostile AI, battling for valuable loot across dangerous environments.
This radical evolution contrasts sharply with Marathon's origins. The original 1994 title and its sequels (Marathon 2: Durandal in 1995 and Marathon Infinity in 1996) were narrative-driven single-player adventures.

In an exclusive PlayStation.blog post, Bungie developers revealed their narrative approach. Despite transitioning to multiplayer, Narrative Lead Jonathan Goff emphasized preserving Bungie's signature storytelling philosophy.
"The original trilogy masterfully wove narratives, events, and characters into worlds ripe for discovery," Goff explained. "Our vision for Marathon isn't simply to tell stories – we're creating dynamic worlds where emergent narratives naturally unfold."
Crafting a Living Narrative Ecosystem

The showcase highlighted Marathon's economic systems, where every inventory item carries monetary value. However, Game Director Joe Ziegler clarified wealth accumulation isn't the sole objective.
"We're building Marathon as a 'story engine'," Ziegler told PC Gamer. "Some of gaming's most memorable moments come from failed missions or unexpected outcomes. Success isn't just survival – it's about the incredible stories players create together."
Collaborating With Community Pioneers

Bungie has actively incorporated player feedback since Marathon's early development stages. Initial concerns about inconsistent spawns and unpredictable loot distribution led to significant design improvements.
"We redesigned matches to give every team equal starting opportunities," Ziegler explained. "Now squads can strategize effectively before each engagement, creating fair competition for valuable objectives."
Marathon Closed Alpha Testing Details

The limited Closed Alpha runs from April 23 to May 4, currently restricted to North American players. Participants can experiment with four distinct Runner archetypes:
- Blackbird (Warlock-inspired tactician)
- Void (stealth specialist)
- Locus (defensive shield user)
- Glitch (high-mobility skirmisher)
Testers will explore three environments including Perimeter's forested terrain and Dire Marsh's expansive battlegrounds.

Interested players can register through Marathon's official Discord server using the "/alpha" command. Note that invitations remain limited for this initial testing phase.
