Silent Hill f Story Is Supernatural & Psychological Horror Mix

Higurashi and When They Cry creator Ryukishi07 has shared insights into his work on Silent Hill f, describing the game's supernatural and psychological components as being akin to "salad dressing."

While anticipation for Silent Hill f continues to build—the upcoming installment that revives a series dormant since the last mainline entry in 2012—writer Ryukishi07 had remained relatively quiet until his recent appearance at Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles last month.

During a panel with producer Motoi Okamoto and composer and sound designer Akira Yamaoka, Ryukishi07 explained that his approach to this project differed from his usual writing process, as he concentrated the narrative around one central theme.

As reported by Famitsu through Automaton, Ryukishi07 noted that players may initially find it challenging to distinguish between the game's supernatural and psychological horror elements, as they often appear deeply intertwined. However, as the story unfolds, players will gradually uncover the truth—a moment he compared to "a salad dressing."

Elaborating on the metaphor, he explained that the two types of horror will eventually separate and become distinct, much like oil and vinegar in salad dressing, even if they are thoroughly blended at first.

If this comparison strikes you as unusual, rest assured you're not alone. Ryukishi07 added that, alongside piecing together facts and clues about the town of Ebisugaoka, the game will intentionally leave room for player interpretation and speculation—something Silent Hill fans appreciate.

He also revealed that Silent Hill f isn't solely a tale of horror and suffering. Similar to earlier entries, the game explores profound human experiences, including themes of love, grief, and more.

Silent Hill f is not a sequel to any existing Silent Hill game. Konami itself confirmed via X/Twitter that this will be a standalone story, independent from the series, allowing newcomers to the franchise to enjoy it as well.

Okamoto highlighted that more challenging combat, combined with a striking visual and musical contrast between beauty and terror—alongside the "terrible beauty" of the monster designs—creates a truly frightening experience. Even the puzzles, he noted, are rooted in psychological distress and suffering.

Set in 1960s Japan, Silent Hill f follows Hinako Shimizu, a teenager burdened by societal, familial, and peer expectations. As shown in the Japanese reveal trailer from March, it is the first Silent Hill game to receive an 18+ rating in Japan. The game launches on September 25 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series.
