Xbox CEO Phil Spencer Reflects on Past Mistakes and Future Plans
In a recent interview at PAX West 2024, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer openly discussed past decisions, admitting some were among the "worst" in his career. He highlighted missed opportunities with major franchises like Bungie's Destiny and Harmonix's Guitar Hero.
Spencer, who joined Xbox while Bungie was under Microsoft's umbrella, shared his initial hesitation regarding Destiny, only appreciating its potential later with the House of Wolves expansion. Similarly, he expressed initial doubts about Guitar Hero's success.
Despite these setbacks, Spencer emphasized his forward-looking approach, focusing on current and future projects. One notable upcoming title is Dune: Awakening, a collaboration with Funcom.
Dune: Awakening's Xbox release, however, presents challenges, particularly for the Xbox Series S, according to Funcom's chief product officer, Scott Junior. While acknowledging optimization hurdles, Junior reassured gamers of a smooth experience even on older hardware.
Meanwhile, the indie title Entoria: The Last Song faces delays on Xbox due to a lack of communication and response from Microsoft, according to developer Jyamma Games. The game's PlayStation 5 and PC releases remain on track, but the Xbox version's future is uncertain. Jyamma Games CEO Jacky Greco expressed significant frustration over the situation.
