Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging System
FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not feature the in-game messaging system, a staple of the Soulsborne series. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki (in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan), is purely practical. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions around 40 minutes long, leaves insufficient time for players to engage with the messaging system.
While the asynchronous messaging system has been a key element in fostering player interaction and community engagement in previous FromSoftware titles, its absence in Nightreign aims to create a more streamlined and intense experience.
Maintaining Asynchronous Features
Despite removing the messaging system, Nightreign will retain and enhance other asynchronous elements. The bloodstain mechanic, for example, will return, offering players even more information about their fellow players' deaths and the opportunity to loot their ghosts. This focus on other asynchronous features underscores FromSoftware's commitment to a dynamic multiplayer experience.
A "Compressed" RPG Experience
The omission of the messaging system aligns with FromSoftware's vision for Nightreign as a "compressed RPG." The three-day structure, also confirmed, further contributes to this goal of delivering a consistently intense and varied gameplay experience with minimal downtime.
Nightreign is slated for a 2025 release, as revealed during The Game Awards 2024. A specific release date remains unannounced.
