Single-Player Games Succeed by Sales, Not Concurrents

by Nova Oct 23,2025

Krafton, the publisher behind inZOI, has responded to discussions about the game's declining concurrent player count on Steam, emphasizing that sales figures are a more accurate measure of success for this single-player title.

The visually striking Sims competitor made a strong debut on Steam, reaching an all-time peak of 87,377 concurrent players. Krafton revealed that inZOI achieved remarkable sales of 1 million copies within its first week - setting a new record as the fastest-selling game in the South Korean company's history. It climbed to the top of Steam's Global Top Sellers list (by revenue) within just 40 minutes of launch. CEO CH Kim announced plans to develop inZOI into a "long-term franchise IP."

Since its launch, inZOI's Steam concurrent player numbers have significantly decreased, with a recent 24-hour peak of only 1,477 players. As reported by TheGamer, the game's peak concurrent count has fallen below even The Sims 3, a title released 16 years ago.

When IGN reached out for comment, Krafton dismissed Steam's concurrent player metrics as irrelevant for evaluating a single-player game's success.

"inZOI maintains consistent sales performance," Krafton stated. "For a single-player experience, tracking sales growth at major update cycles provides a more meaningful performance indicator than monitoring Steam's concurrent player statistics."

The industry-wide focus on Steam concurrent numbers has sparked debate in recent years, with many developers arguing these figures don't fully represent a game's performance - especially for single-player experiences.

In 2024, Pocketpair's community lead John "Bucky" Buckley criticized the gaming community's fixation on player counts and "dead game" narratives as unhealthy. Similarly, Helldivers 2 production director Alex Bolle told IGN in April that Steam concurrents represent "just one metric among many."

Regarding inZOI's Steam reception, overall user reviews remain "Mostly Positive," though recent feedback shows a "Mixed" rating. As an Early Access title, the game hasn't reached its full release yet - a point Krafton emphasized in its statement:

"Early Access marks just the beginning of inZOI's development journey. Our team's current focus lies in collecting player feedback and enhancing the game with new features, performance improvements, and a more immersive experience. We appreciate our dedicated community and will share regular content updates in the coming months."

Krafton also announced plans to launch inZOI on the Mac App Store and Steam this August. The macOS version, optimized for Apple Silicon, will leverage MetalFX and Core ML technologies to match the Windows version's gameplay quality.
