The overwhelmingly positive reception for Death Stranding 2 continues giving director Hideo Kojima creative anxiety. Discover why early acclaim troubles gaming's visionary auteur and his unconventional plans for Kojima Productions' future.
Early Praise for Death Stranding 2 Troubling Kojima
Director Fears Sequel Might Become Forgettable Blockbuster

Ahead of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach's 2025 launch, development playtests have yielded concerningly positive responses according to creator Hideo Kojima. In a June 12 Game Informer interview, the legendary designer expressed reservations about universal praise during internal testing.
Kojima draws from gaming history, observing how truly groundbreaking work often faces initial skepticism before achieving lasting recognition. "Timeless creations that endure decades typically aren't immediately celebrated," Kojima explained. "They require time for proper appreciation - just like how Metal Gear needed nearly ten years."

"What troubles me," he continued, "is seeing Death Stranding 2 received so enthusiastically during testing. Unlike the divided opinions surrounding the original, this unanimous approval makes me question whether we've created something sufficiently innovative or just another disposable blockbuster."
The visionary director maintains ambitious creative goals beyond commercial success, hoping DS2's innovations will inspire future generations of game developers.
Kojima Aims to Spark Creativity Rather Than Establish Legacy

Regarding his studio's future leadership, Kojima dismissed conventional succession planning during his June 10 GQ interview. "I refuse to simply pass the torch," he stated firmly. "Attempting to clone my creative approach would doom Kojima Productions."
Instead, the director envisions fostering independent creative voices who develop their own artistic visions rather than mimicking his style. "My role isn't to create successors," he clarified, "but to inspire original thinkers who'll push the medium forward."

Nevertheless, Kojima acknowledges practical continuity concerns. Following serious pandemic-era illness that prompted mortality reflections, he disclosed preparing contingency plans in Edge Magazine's May 15 issue.
"I've entrusted my assistant with comprehensive design documents," Kojima revealed. "Should anything happen, these materials could guide Kojima Productions' future - though I'd never want them limited to just maintaining existing IP."

Fans needn't worry about imminent departures however, with Kojima currently overseeing Death Stranding 2's development alongside ambitious collaborations with PlayStation (Physint) and Xbox (OD).
