Gundam Breaker 4: A Deep Dive Review Across Platforms

Back in 2016, the Gundam Breaker series was a niche find for PS Vita enthusiasts. Fast forward to 2024, and Gundam Breaker 4's global, multi-platform release is a significant milestone for Western fans. Having logged 60+ hours across various platforms, I'm overwhelmingly impressed, though a few minor issues persist.

This release isn't just about the game; it's about accessibility. No more importing Asia English releases! Gundam Breaker 4 boasts dual audio (English and Japanese) and extensive subtitle options (EFIGS and more). But how does the game itself fare across platforms? Let's explore.

The narrative is a mixed bag. While some pre-mission dialogue feels drawn out, the latter half delivers compelling character reveals and engaging conversations. Newcomers will quickly catch up, although the significance of certain characters might be lost initially. (Embargo restrictions prevent detailed story discussion beyond the first two chapters.) While the initial plot is straightforward, I found myself genuinely attached to the main cast by the end, though my personal favorites appear later.

However, the story takes a backseat to the core gameplay loop: crafting the ultimate Gunpla. The customization is mind-blowing. Beyond individual part adjustments (arms, weapons, etc.), you can fine-tune part size and scale, even incorporating SD parts for truly unique creations.

Further enhancing customization are builder parts with unique skills. Combat utilizes EX and OP skills based on your equipment, complemented by ability cartridges offering buffs and debuffs. Missions reward parts, materials for upgrades, and materials to increase part rarity, unlocking more skills and allowing strategic part cannibalization.

The difficulty curve is well-balanced. While optional quests offer extra income and parts, the standard difficulty feels manageable without excessive grinding. Three higher difficulty levels unlock as the story progresses, significantly increasing the challenge. Don't overlook the optional quests, especially the enjoyable survival mode.

Customization extends to paint jobs, decals, and weathering effects, offering immense depth for Gunpla enthusiasts. But does the gameplay live up to the hype?

The combat is satisfying. Despite the relatively easy normal difficulty, weapon variety and skill customization keep battles engaging. I personally favored greatsword-style weapons. Boss fights involve targeting weak points, managing health bars and shields – a familiar formula executed well. One exception was a tricky boss fight involving two enemies and slightly problematic AI.

Visually, the game is a mixed bag. Early environments feel somewhat sparse, but overall variety is decent. The Gunpla models and animations are exceptionally well-done, prioritizing style over realism. Effects are impressive, and large-scale boss battles are visually stunning. The game scales well on lower-end hardware.

The soundtrack is a letdown. While some tracks stand out, many are forgettable. The absence of iconic anime music (a common feature in previous installments) is disappointing. Custom music import is also absent.

Voice acting, however, is surprisingly excellent in both English and Japanese. I preferred the English dub for its immersive quality during action sequences.

Beyond a few minor bugs (one particularly annoying mission type, some minor glitches), and the occasional repetitive mission for gear grinding, Gundam Breaker 4 is a polished experience. Newcomers who dislike grinding might find it repetitive, however.

I encountered a few bugs: save issues with certain names, and a couple seemingly specific to the Steam Deck (prolonged title screen load times, a mission crashing only when docked).

Online multiplayer (tested briefly on PS5) was functional, but PC server testing was unavailable pre-launch. Further updates will follow.

My concurrent Master Grade Gunpla build (RG 78-2 MG 3.0) provided a unique perspective, highlighting the intricate design of these kits. This personal project will continue after the review embargo lifts.

Platform Differences:

  • PC: Supports over 60fps, mouse/keyboard and controller, multiple button prompts, customizable controls. Runs exceptionally well on Steam Deck.
  • PS5: Capped at 60fps, excellent visuals, good rumble and Activity Card support.
  • Switch: Runs around 30fps, downgraded visuals (resolution, detail, reflections), sluggish assembly and diorama modes.

DLC: The Deluxe and Ultimate Editions offer early unlocks (parts and builder parts), and diorama content. The additional content enhances the experience but isn't essential.

Story Focus: While the story is enjoyable, the game's true appeal lies in the customization and combat.

Final Verdict: Gundam Breaker 4 is a spectacular entry in the series, especially for Steam Deck users. The exceptional customization, engaging combat, and improved accessibility make it a must-have for Gunpla fans and action game enthusiasts alike.
