Xbox Price Hike: Analysts Predict Industry-Wide Increase

by Layla May 27,2025

In recent weeks, the gaming industry has seen a series of price increases across major console manufacturers. Microsoft raised the prices of all its Xbox Series consoles and many of its accessories globally, and confirmed that some new games would cost $80 this holiday season. Just a week prior, PlayStation similarly raised prices on consoles in some regions, and shortly before that, Nintendo bumped its Switch 2 accessory prices and announced its own first $80 game. These tariff-induced price hikes have arrived, causing a noticeable shift in the cost of gaming.

The wave of price increases has been attributed largely to tariffs, a common theme among analysts. Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, Inc., highlighted that Microsoft's consoles, manufactured in Asia, are directly impacted by these tariffs. He noted that Microsoft strategically used the current economic climate to announce these global price hikes in one go, minimizing backlash. Joost van Dreunen from NYU Stern echoed this sentiment, describing Microsoft's approach as "ripping off the Band-Aid all at once rather than death by a thousand cuts." This synchronized global price adjustment was seen as a strategic move to manage consumer reaction and maintain competitive pricing in an increasingly service-oriented market.

Other factors contributing to the price hikes include persistent inflation and increased supply chain costs, as mentioned by Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analytics. He also pointed out that the launch prices of competitors like the Switch 2 and Sony's recent price adjustments likely influenced Microsoft's decision to raise prices now. The increases were most significant in the U.S., reflecting the impact of tariff policies.

Blinking Third

The question on many gamers' minds is whether Sony will follow suit with similar price increases. Analysts, including Rhys Elliott from Alinea Analytics, believe it's likely that Sony will raise prices on PlayStation hardware, accessories, and games. Elliott emphasized that with Nintendo and Xbox setting a precedent with $80 games, other publishers might follow, as the market seems willing to bear these higher prices. Daniel Ahmad from Niko Partners noted that while Sony has already increased prices in certain regions, a U.S. price hike for the PS5 remains a possibility.

James McWhirter from Omdia highlighted that PS5 hardware, manufactured in China, faces risks from U.S. tariffs. However, the timing of these price increases, particularly in the U.S., remains a challenging decision due to the market's size and importance. Mat Piscatella from Circana remained cautious about predicting Sony's moves but pointed to the Entertainment Software Association's comments on the impact of tariffs on game prices, suggesting that rising prices are a symptom of broader economic issues.

Video Games Are Fine... But Are We?

Despite these price increases, analysts remain optimistic about the resilience of the gaming industry. Microsoft's recent 'This Is An Xbox' campaign indicates a shift towards a service platform, suggesting that the company is prepared for potential declines in console sales. Harding-Rolls anticipates a boost in sales with the launch of GTA 6 in Q2 2026, despite ongoing declines in hardware sales.

The consensus among analysts is that while higher prices might affect individual spending, overall gaming expenditure is likely to remain stable or even grow. Elliott noted that gaming is price-inelastic, with early adopters continuing to purchase despite economic pressures. Manu Rosier from Newzoo suggested that consumers might become more selective, spending more on subscriptions and live-service games rather than full-priced titles.

Harding-Rolls pointed out that the U.S., being the largest console market, might feel more of the impact due to localized tariffs. However, Ahmad suggested that growth in Asian and MENA markets, particularly in countries like India, Thailand, and China, could offset some of these effects. McWhirter emphasized that while full game prices have not historically followed inflation, the move to $80 games by Xbox and Nintendo signals a trend that other publishers may follow.

Piscatella, while less optimistic, acknowledged the uncertainty in the market. He predicted a shift towards free-to-play and accessible gaming, with games like Fortnite, Minecraft, and Roblox seeing increased engagement. As prices rise in everyday categories, he foresees fewer dollars available for gaming in the U.S., potentially leading to a decline in spending.

In conclusion, while the gaming industry navigates these price increases, the resilience of gaming as a form of entertainment remains strong. The shifts in spending patterns and the move towards service-based platforms suggest that the industry is adapting to these economic changes, ensuring that video games continue to thrive despite the challenges.
