Assassin's Creed Shadows: Revamped Parkour and Dual Protagonists
Assassin's Creed Shadows, launching February 14th, introduces significant gameplay changes, most notably a revamped parkour system and dual protagonists with distinct styles. This new installment takes the franchise to feudal Japan for the first time.
A New Approach to Parkour:
Ubisoft has redesigned the parkour mechanics, shifting from freeform climbing to designated "parkour highways." While this might seem restrictive, the developer assures players that most climbable surfaces remain accessible, albeit requiring strategic approaches. The addition of seamless ledge dismounts, allowing for stylish flips and dives, enhances the fluidity of movement. A new prone position also enables sprinting dives and slides. The Associate Game Director, Simon Lemay-Comtois, explains that this change allows for more controlled level design, particularly considering the differing abilities of the two protagonists.
Dual Protagonists: Stealth and Combat:
Shadows features Naoe, a stealthy shinobi adept at wall scaling and shadow maneuvers, and Yasuke, a powerful samurai excelling in open combat but lacking climbing abilities. This dual protagonist system aims to appeal to both classic stealth fans and those who prefer the RPG-style combat introduced in titles like Odyssey and Valhalla. The contrasting playstyles offer diverse gameplay experiences within the same setting.
Release and Competition:
Launching on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC on February 14th, Assassin's Creed Shadows faces stiff competition from other high-profile releases that month, including Monster Hunter Wilds, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and Avowed. Whether it can capture the gaming spotlight remains to be seen. Ubisoft is expected to unveil further details as the release date approaches.
