Avowed Director hints at the team's exciting plans for the franchise following the game's successful release. Dive into the details to discover the potential for expansions, sequels, and other future projects from the studio.
Avowed Director Wants To Do More With The World They Built
Possibility of Expansions or Sequels
Avowed has achieved impressive sales, satisfying both Microsoft and Obsidian. In an insightful interview with Bloomberg on February 22, 2025, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the tantalizing prospect of expanding the Avowed universe through expansions or sequels.
While Obsidian has yet to officially announce any plans, Patel expressed a keen interest in continuing to direct games and explore new creative avenues. She shared her enthusiasm for further developing the Avowed world, stating, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it."
Changes in Avowed During Development
The journey to create Avowed was filled with challenges and pivotal changes. Patel candidly described the development process as "messy," but emphasized that the team eventually found their stride.
Originally conceived in 2018, Avowed's development began amidst Obsidian's efforts to navigate the complexities of being an independent studio, despite successes with titles like Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity. Microsoft's acquisition in 2020 marked a turning point, leading to the game's announcement. However, the team had to make significant adjustments, including forgoing multiplayer features and other functionalities. A leadership change in January 2021 and a subsequent reboot under Patel's direction refocused the game on the rich lore of the Pillars of Eternity franchise and introduced open zones instead of a fully open world.
Patel reflected on the development experience, noting, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."
Obsidian Wants Pillars of Eternity Tactics
With Avowed bringing renewed attention to the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Obsidian is exploring new avenues for expansion. During a Twitch Livestream on February 23, 2025, Josh Sawyer, Director of Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, revealed the studio's interest in developing a tactics game titled Pillars: Tactics.
Sawyer highlighted the widespread interest in tactics games within the studio, saying, "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like, a lot of people at the studio would like to work on; there are a lot of people who like tactics games." However, he acknowledged the challenges in defining the project's scope, including team size, visual quality, and overall scale.
Despite this, Sawyer remains committed to his vision for Pillars of Eternity 3, aspiring for a budget comparable to that of Baldur’s Gate 3, which stands at $100 million—a significant leap from the budget of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
